Sweater Funk are proud to present two of our favorite local artists that have been representing modern funk for the Bay Area. B. Bravo & The Starship Connection blew our minds when we caught them a few months back and we realized that we have to do everything we can to get our folks to see what this band can do live to funk up your life. We met Kenyan aka K-Maxx when he passed us a cdr of his tune "Supadrunk", which, by the way, was turning heads when we dropped it at our 3 year anniversary. Including the likes of Peanut Butter Wolf who told us he HAD to know who did the track! K-Maxx will be performing this track and more from his forthcoming single on Sound Boutique Records.

Bay Area modern funk sorcerer B. Bravo has assembled a crew of intergalactic badmen to form The Starship Connection - a synthesizer funk / future bass quartet featuring Bay Area instrumentalists Teeko (F.A.M.E./FourOne Funk), Daren Grant (Bayonics), and Bob Menacho (Bayonics). Think a love-child born of Parliament, Zapp and Mtume tinged with modern electronic dance sensibilities. The Starship Connection's colorful funky sound, exceptional musicianship & genre transcending style is sure to blow your musical mind wide open while you're sweating it out on the dancefloor.  In addition to playing classic B. Bravo joints like Midnite and Computa Love, the crew will be performing brand new original material on their sprawling array of analog gear. Their debut EP (Jointly produced by Bravo & Teeko), featuring the massive bounce cut 'The Roll Out' and mid tempo funk-bomb 'More than Just a Dream' is set for release in early 2012 on Frite Nite Records.

K-Maxx, aka Ken Hopkins, lives for the music. He's a Bay Area original from San Francisco who's been involved with artists such as Dan the Automator, Too Short, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power), King Tech (Wake Up Show) and more. Releasing two acclaimed underground hip hop albums during the Bay's initial reign in the 90's, K-Maxx began the early 2000's with his seminal "Ghetto Gumbo" radio show which can still be heard Friday Nights, 10 PM til 2 AM on KPOO in San Francisco. He returned to creating music in mid 2000's, producing for artists like 05' B.A.R.S Underground Artist of the Year, Andre Nickatina and co-writing and producing the hit single "Tuesday" for R&B Legend Lenny Williams, which was recently in the Top 30 Urban AC nationwide. Being comfortable making hip hop and R & B has led Ken to start creating his own boogie funk sounds he remembers from his youth, culminating in a forthcoming single for East Bay record label Sound Boutique Records. Owned and run by Sweater Funk's Sean Boogie, Sound Boutique Records will be releasing a single for his tune "Super Dunk" b/w "Love is Coming". This is a long time coming for funk fans, as Sweater Funk and other DJs local and international have been geeking over "Supadrunk" since K-Maxx gave us the cdr almost a year ago!

About Sweater Funk:

San Francisco's Sweater Funk DJ crew have been the city's most dedicated purveyors of the funky subgenre known as BOOGIE for 3 years now. Their vision to bring boogie, strictly on vinyl originals, to the masses has earned them a diehard following who pack the basement of San Francisco's Li Po Lounge every Sunday. They've won SF Weekly's Best new club 2009, hosted Djs such as Dam-Funk, Steve Arrington (Slave), Daz-I-Kue, Peanut Butter Wolf, Kon & Amir, Onra, Monk One, Cool Chris, E Da Boss, Mayer Hawthorne, and have become a sister club to Dam-Funk's own Funkmosphere night in Los Angeles.
